The Microsoft Updates product uses the Windows Updates agent to check the installed and the available Windows Updates on an endpoint and reports them to the HEIMDAL Dashboard. The Administrator can control the way the Windows Updates agent works (with the settings configured in the HEIMDAL Dashboard), it deploys and installs available Windows Updates with two methods:
A. Manual deployment and installation of Windows Updates means that the HEIMDAL Dashboard Administrator can manually select the available update(s) to be deployed right from the HEIMDAL Dashboard -> Products -> Patch & Asset Management -> Operating System Updates.
B. Automatic deployment and installation of Windows Updates means that the HEIMDAL Dashboard Administrator can configure the automatic deployment and installation of available Windows Updates through the HEIMDAL Agent.
Windows Updates are available for installation when they are made available on the Server Source (e.g. WSUS Server or the Microsoft API).
1. I enabled Microsoft Updates but I don't see any updates available or installed
2. I see available Windows Updates but they are not getting installed
I enabled Microsoft Updates but I don't see any updates available for installation or installed
BEHAVIOR: I have enabled Microsoft Updates but no updates are available or installed.
SOLUTION: this issue can be troubleshot by checking the flow below.
1. If you are using WSUS, the HEIMDAL Agent will check for available updates on the server source that is configured locally on each endpoint. Make sure you have approved any available updates in WSUS.
2. If you are not using WSUS, on an endpoint, open Windows Updates settings and press the Check for Updates button.
The HEIMDAL Agent relies on the Windows Update agent to report and install any available Windows Updates. So, if the Windows Update agent is throwing an error, you need to run the Troubleshooter for Windows Updates to fix the problem and then, the HEIMDAL Agent will be able to check and report available Windows Updates.
3. To run the Troubleshooter, open Windows Update settings, and click on Troubleshoot (from the left-side menu) -> Additional troubleshooters -> Windows Update.
If the error(s) has/have been fixed, the HEIMDAL Agent should report the available Windows Updates.
